On arrival in England he was attached to the 8th Batt of the BWIR and saw service first in France where during the Ypres-Paschaendale operations in 1917 he stood the shellfire with astonishing coolness, and as a hen gathers her brood, so he got his men safely out of the curtain of shellfire. Up to within 3 weeks of his death, he was to all appearances in the full bloom of health and carried himself with an aplomb which earned the admiration of all the men. He later saw service in Italy.
